Merchant processing lets you accept credit card payments through a system that links four parties; a cardholder, merchants, issuers and merchant’s bank. A transaction involves the cardholder making a purchase from the merchant who then submits the credit card transaction. By choosing to accept credit card transactions using merchant processing, merchants can lower administrative costs, increase their revenue, gain quicker access to funds, and become more efficient. Accepting credit cards helps your business appear more modern and sophisticated.

Merchants tend to attract more customers by accepting credit card payments using merchant processing. To accept credit cards, you first need to create a merchant processing account. With merchant processing, you can choose to accept credit cards in a number of ways. Credit card transactions can be processed using traditional terminals, computers, by phone, on via Internet.

Merchants who are just starting out in business may not want to immediately set up their own merchant processing. Your prospective merchant bank will check your credit worthiness as well as your company’s credit history. Some merchants choose to go with a third-party merchant processing, like Pay Pal, which usually involves no long-term commitments and no fixed costs. Moreover, they provide much less control over your processing account and are prone to suspensions and delayed funding.

Some merchant processing may find it convenient to use someone else’s account until their processing volumes grow large enough to justify setting up their own. Well, this practice is forbidden by the Credit Card Associations and a merchant who is found to have let others use his or her merchant account service, will lose it and will never again be able to establish merchant processing. A higher level of chargeback, generated by the unauthorized user, may also lead to suspension of your credit card transaction processing account.
